The Netzer David International Yeshiva
Our HeritageIn the days immediately following the resurrection and ascension of Yeshua the Messiah (Jesus of Nazareth), a Jewish renewal movement literally exploded in the heart of Israel. Beginning at Shavuot in Jerusalem, thousands and soon hundreds of thousands of Jewish people committed themselves to Yeshua the Messiah. Eventually, they numbered over one million people in Israel alone.
Centuries later, in the early 1880's a respected District Rabbi in Hungary, Isaac (Yitzhak) Lichtenstein picked up an old copy of the New Testament and began reading it. He later remarked that he had found in the Newer Testament the true Judaism; so he would remain as before with his congregation, and preach it in the synagogue. "I believe in the New Testament so I will remain among my own brethren, as a watchman from within and to plead with them to behold in Jesus the true glory of Israel." Yitzhak Lichtenstein was one of several important Jewish leaders and scholars of that period which spawned a Messianic movement that eventually numbered about a quarter of a million Jewish people.
And then, in our own generation the Spirit of G-d has birthed a Messianic Jewish movement of similar proportions and with a similar perspective. Although Israel became a Jewish nation once again in 1948, it was not until 1967 that the Jewish people regained possession of Jerusalem. After the liberation of Jerusalem, growing numbers of Jewish people encountered Yeshua as the Messiah predicted by the ancient prophets of Israel. Like their ancestors in the first century and in the nineteenth century, they clearly expressed their commitment to Yeshua while continuing in the Jewish life and traditions of previous generations. Since the fall of Communism in the early 1990's, they have been joined by literally thousands of Jewish people from all over Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union who have accepted Yeshua their Messiah. As a result, there has been a remarkable growth in the number of Messianic synagogues worldwide, with new congregations emerging all the time. This amazing growth has been accompanied by the pressing need for trained Messianic leaders and teachers, and quality Messianic Jewish training to equip such people.
Our Objective
The Netzer David International Yeshiva was formed to meet these needs. Netzer David is Hebrew for "Branch of David," an important Messianic title found in Isaiah 11:1, and also alluded to in Isaiah 53:2ff.
Taking its lead from our ancestors, this new Yeshiva focuses on a commitment to and continuity with our ancient Jewish traditions and heritage; and highlights the answer to the centuries-old longing of our people for the coming of the Messiah, now fulfilled by Yeshua. It offers in-depth training to enable Messianic Jewish leaders to stand within Judaism and among the Jewish people. The Yeshiva equips its students to take various leadership and ministry roles in Messianic Jewish synagogues and ministries, and to sensitively and effectively interact with rabbis and others from within the Jewish community.
